Deck Staining, Refinishing, and Repair in Medford, Oregon
Decks take more sun and foot traffic than any other finished surface on the house. Travis Sheets Painting builds, repairs, and refinishes them across the Rogue Valley: sanded to bare wood where needed, rotten boards replaced, and penetrating oil stains that soak in and protect. Licensed, bonded, and insured, Oregon CCB #237413.

Oil Stain That Soaks In, Not a Film That Peels
The most common deck failure we see is a coating that was rolled on top of gray, weathered wood. It looks good for a season, then peels and flakes under foot traffic. A deck finish has to bond with the wood, so the work starts with cleaning and sanding back to sound, bare wood.
Then we apply a penetrating oil stain that soaks into the grain and protects it from the inside, without a surface film to crack. It is the same approach that has kept one fifty year old redwood deck going strong.

How We Refinish a Deck
-
Walkthrough and written bid
Travis looks at the boards, framing, railings, and stairs, tells you what needs repair and what does not, and writes an itemized bid.
-
Repair
Soft, split, or rotten boards are replaced, loose railings are made solid, and popped fasteners are reset before any finish goes on.
-
Clean and sand
Dirt, mildew, and failing old finish are removed, and the surface is sanded back to sound wood so the new stain can penetrate.
-
Oil stain
Penetrating oil stain is applied on dry wood in moderate weather so it soaks in and cures properly.
-
Final walkthrough and cleanup
We walk the finished deck with you, touch up anything that is not right, and clean up the yard and patio.

What Deck Staining Costs in Medford
Deck jobs are priced by the work in them, so an honest number requires seeing the deck. These are the things that move the price:
- Size and layout. Square footage, multiple levels, and stairs all add time.
- Condition of the wood. A deck that only needs cleaning and a fresh coat is a different job than one that has to be sanded back to bare wood.
- Repairs. Board replacement and railing fixes are listed separately on the bid.
- Railings and skirting. Spindles and balustrades take far more hand work than open deck boards.
Every bid is free, written, and itemized, so you can see exactly what you are paying for. When you compare quotes, check what each one says about sanding and repair. That is usually where a low number comes from.

FAQ / 06
Deck Questions We Hear in Medford
- Should a deck be stained or painted?
- For most wood decks, a penetrating oil stain is the better choice. It soaks into the wood and protects it without forming a film that can peel under foot traffic and sun. Railings and trim can be painted when that suits the house.
- How often does a deck need to be re-stained in southern Oregon?
- It depends on sun exposure and foot traffic. Decks that face south or west and sit in full Rogue Valley sun wear fastest. When the wood starts to gray or water no longer beads on the surface, it is time. We can look at your deck and tell you honestly whether it needs work yet.
- Can an old, weathered deck be saved?
- Often, yes. Worn decks are sanded back to bare wood, damaged boards are replaced, and the surface is refinished with oil stain. One redwood deck we re-stained is fifty years old and still going strong.
- Do you repair or replace deck boards and railings?
- Yes. We repair and replace boards, railings, and balustrades, and we design and build new decks. You do not need a separate carpenter before the stain goes on.
- When is the best time to stain a deck in Medford?
- Stain needs dry wood and moderate temperatures to soak in and cure, so deck work is scheduled from spring into fall, avoiding the hottest part of summer afternoons. Calling early in the season gives you the best choice of dates.
- How much does deck staining cost in Medford?
- It depends on the size of the deck, the condition of the wood, how much sanding and board replacement it needs, and whether railings, stairs, and skirting are included. Every estimate is free, written, and itemized. Call (541) 531-8980 to set up a walkthrough.
